A Daemon like Dread, Minoru Hotaru-Hoshi - known to the Mictian Project as Charon - is what I like to call something of a forced altruistic character, which may well be the only way I can convincingly play altruists.

Unlike Dread, Minoru had almost no offensive psychic abilities, though the tally of power he had was just a notch beneath Dread's. Whereas Dread's powers were perhaps 60% telepathic/illusionary, 30% controlling and 10% astrally defensive, Minoru was 80% astrally defensive - making him the only human immune to Dread's antics - 10% group-empathic and 10% emotionally manipulative. (Please note that these percentages are all rough estimates.)

What is group empathy?

Group empathy is the ability to sense the overall emotions of a group of people.

It's important to note that Minoru was decidedly unempathic toward individuals and frequently struggled to pick up on visual or tonal clues that are natural to us, though if presented with enough unmistakable evidence, he was perfectly capable of - with some rational concentration - making out what emotion the invididual presented to him felt.

This combination of factors made Minoru ridiculously awkward on the phone - not only was he dealing with an individual, but the only clue to their emotions he had was their tone, which simply did not suffice, making him vastly uncomfortable.

With his empathy being psychic in nature, he had no means of hiding from the influx of emotions. Truly, he was unsure if he himself had any, or if he simply was the reflection of those around him - either way, he vigorously strove to making those around him happy, indulging in a mostly workaholic lifestyle to take burdens off everyone's shoulders.

Thankfully, he's been blessed with good friends who don't abuse this in him, thus allowing him to properly distribute his energies - plentiful though they may be, they are, after all, not infinite.

Emotional manipulation

Partly to Minoru's chagrin, a talent of his was to simply shift or create emotions in individuals of his choice. He had always sworn not to use this to ill effect and generally avoids using it at all due to the subjective nature of 'ill effect', but is wrecked with doubt about the efficiency of his attempted restraint since Keitaro Tsukino - prompted by Enki - accused him of manipulating him into accepting Minoru as a friend, despite evidence suggesting it to be unnatural, given Minoru being the murderer of Dread at a time Dread and Keitaro were at the very least loosely befriended.

In fact, Minoru does use this power subconsciously - mostly to adjust people's moods to the positive if it is too far removed from the group norm in the negative. (If a group of people are feeling unwell, he will instead focus on tangible actions to make them feel better.) Because this is mostly mistakable for simply charisma on his part - which he does have - it goes mostly undetected, even by himself.

Minoru is disturbed by this ability of his, worried that it might end up alienating people around him - which would in turn reflect negative emotions on him, which would, quite obviously, make him feel utterly rotten.

Appearance

Taken from the Crimson Feather website, this is Minoru's original physical description:

"Minoru, whilst native Japanese, does not have quite the almond-shaped eyes of most Asians - why is hard to say. His hair is black, though, as one would expect, and he keeps it trimmed fairly short, with just enough length to cover his forehead if it is not combed back. He typically wears a suit, being a business man, and even his 'casual' clothes look nearly formal, the only difference being that they do not crinkle so easily.

"His grey eyes are laced at the edges with a hint of green, giving them some life. For his kin, he's astonishingly tall and thin, to the point of being viewed as unattractive by the more traditionally minded. By western standards, he's rather pretty, though his face is a touch too round, and his brows a touch too irregular. His nose is fairly flat, but it complements the rest of his face.

"For those who can see auras, Minoru has a strong aura in constant flux between a soft, almost pastel green with a hint of warm yellow, and a cool but deep blue, nearly royal, the two most often seen as a mesh: a glittering turquoise, like the reflections off a seashell."
